1997 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Shaping up as number one. introductionconventional wisdom says if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But that's exactly what ford did with the all-new taurus and mercury sable last year, a family of sedans and wagons that are even more daringly styled than the 1986 original. Some said the new car was too radical to maintain ford's mid-size leadership. Though it started slowly, the taurus emerged as the '96 sales champ, once again beating honda's accord. walkaroundford design chief jack telnack says he was looking for tension and tautness in the styling to express the energy beneath the surface. He also wanted a one-piece overall silhouette--a seamless quality with everything integrated. We're not quite sure about the design expressing the sub-dural energy, but we do know we like the look. The overall shape is ovoid, a theme that's repeated inside. The hood flows into the windshield and the rear window flows into the deck, lending the seamless look telnack wanted. The nose is low, and the small grille opening is a striking feature. The wheels have been pushed out to the corners, giving the car a stable and cohesive appearance.  rounded corners and softened shapes make the taurus look smaller than the original, but in fact the new car is 5. 4 inches longer and two inches wider. The base engine is a 3. 0-liter overhead valve v6 rated at 145 horsepower. It goes into the g and gl. The lx gets a double-overhead-cam, 32-valve, 3. 0-liter v6 that makes 200 hp. Ford calls it an 'executive express,' a name that seems appropriate for its excellent midrange response, performance-tuned suspension and $26,460 base price.  it has taken detroit a while to come to parity with the europeans and japanese in the suspension department, and the taurus is a good example of getting it right. The front suspension is a macpherson strut design with a lower control arm and stabilizer bar. Links are basically metal rods that locate the suspension. The advantage is a more precisely positioned suspension to maximize handling and response. Wagons and the sho get rear discs. We can understand abs as an optional feature on the price-leading g, but we were surprised that it's also optional on all models but sho. The one we priced was $720 after discount.  since it was all-new last year, there's little in the way of updates for 1997, with one important exception. Ford has recalibrated the computer controls for its taurus/sable automatic transmission to provide smoother shifting. Shift quality was a persistent criticism of first-year editions.  another welcome change: an am/fm radio is standard in all models. interiorthe oval theme is picked up on the inside on the instrument panel, vents, door handle recesses and elsewhere. In an era when instrument panels all seem to look alike, the one in the taurus is a refreshingly distinctive change.  it is also well organized. The buttons and switches run from lower left to upper right within the oval, but the arrangement is quite logical and it doesn't take long for a driver to make adjustments by touch alone, without taking attention away from the road. We also liked the high-quality, high-tech feel of the pushbuttons and switches.  the basic g model comes with a bench front seat for six-passenger capacity. The center portion can be used as a seating position, with its own safety belt, or it can be flipped forward to become an armrest, or it can be folded open once more to reveal storage compartments for cups, tapes, coins and other small stuff. For organizing the small items that get scattered around in a family car, this is an exceptionally inventive piece of design work.  manual air conditioning is standard across the board, electronic optional. Electronically-controlled sound systems are also standard, with the lx getting a cassette player and six speakers.  typical of american manufacturers, the mix of standard and optional features on three sedans and two wagons requires the assistance of a cray supercomputer (or a 12-year-old with a laptop) to determine what goes with what. The base taurus is adequately equipped, the lx very well equipped. At the end of 1996, 80% of taurus sales were gl models, which means most owners began to balk at spending more than $22,000. driving impressionreactions to the original taurus were that ford had made a giant gain in ride, handling, steering feel and overall mechanical quality. Megadittos for the new taurus. As good as the old taurus had become, the new taurus is a leap ahead, a leap that starts with one of the best chassis in the midsize class.  the basic vulcan v6 provides adequate performance, but we prefer the duratec v6, which makes for easier merging and passing. It is smooth, quiet and responsive, with good stoplight getaway.  the automatic is a very good match. Thanks to improved control programming, the shifts are clean and precise.  thanks to the new car's improved chassis, the suspension performs as advertised, keeping the car flat in corners and sopping up bumps and bangs.  visibility is excellent all around, with the sloping hood lending an imax vista up front. Seat comfort is good, but we found the bench seat limited in lateral support. The bucket seats are definitely more comfortable and securing. summarygood has gotten better. The look is definitely controversial, and responses polar--folks either like it or they don't. But 1996 sales suggest there are a lot of 'like-its' out there. The taurus faces some strong rivals in 1997, in particular the honda accord and the new toyota camry. Both of which are very conservative--and very good--cars. Pricing and performance of the three are basically on a par. So when it gets to crunch time, the choice in many families is very likely going to hinge on that controversial shape. 2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All explorers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. Xls sport 2wd 28,260) and 4wd 30,490) add the tire-pressure monitoring system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, black step bars and wheel-lip moldings, an upgraded center console and floor mats.  xlt 2wd 29,650) and 4wd 31,875) get approach lamps in the side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver's seat, lumbar adjustment for both driver and passenger, an overhead console with outside-temperature indicator and compass, and warm steel accents for the center stack. Outside, a monochromatic treatment with chrome grille and fog lamps sets xlt apart. The limited 2wd 34,580) and 4wd 36,805) come with all the eddie bauer goodies, but a somewhat different look, thanks to chromed wheels and roof rails outside and higher-grade single-tone leather inside, with madarin teak accents.  all but xls can be ordered with third-row seating 745), auxiliary rear-compartment air conditioning 650), reverse-sensing system 255), power moonroof 850), and a dvd entertainment system 1,295). A trailer towing prep package 150) replaces the standard class ii hitch with a class iii/iv hitch and adds a 3. 73 (rather than 3. 55) limited-slip rear axle and seven-wire trailer harness.  second-row bucket seats with an extended floor console are available 795) on eddie bauer and limited. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires.  the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. Yet the explorer rides on a relatively handy 113. 7 inch wheelbase, vs. The awkward 129 inches of the extended trailblazer and envoy. It is a tribute to the clever design of ex.

2007 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Thoroughly revised for 2007. introductionwhen it comes time to fill up the tank, it's not easy to justify a full-size sport utility. But ford also reminds us that fuel prices have simply chased away the people who really shouldn't have been driving a full-size sport-utility in the first place.  the expedition is meant for utility, not profiling. It carries people, hauls gear, tows boats, and pulls campers. To start with, ford's research shows that 92 percent of the expedition owners use their big suv for vacations. Some 60 percent use it to transport outdoor sports gear, while 40 percent of expedition owners use the vehicle's towing capacity. Some 84 percent routinely carry more than three passengers behind the front row of seats.  moreover, ford notes that the place of the sport-utility in american life isn't going to disappear. Sales of personal watercraft have increased 9. 2 percent since 2005, while there will be some 6. 3 million households with tow-able recreational campers by 2010. Finally, three-generation families are becoming a substantial part of the vacation picture, so plenty of passenger seats are a necessity, not just a convenience.  with this in mind, the expedition has been thoroughly revised for 2007 to make it a platform for family-friendly adventures. Every aspect of its utility has been improved: towing capacity, passenger comfort and even driving enjoyment. Meanwhile, a new, extended-wheelbase expedition el adds more cargo-carrying capacity, especially noticeable when trying to load groceries or gear behind the third-row seats.  ford has made the expedition even more family-friendly by substantially reducing its price. Ford tells us that expedition models across the range have been reduced in price by an average of $4300. Just as important, a new warranty extends bumper-to-bumper protection to three years/36,000 miles, while the powertain is covered for five years/60,000 miles. In addition, the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners. lineupthe 2007 ford expedition comes in two different sizes, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the new expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v-8 that is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A new, six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A class iii trailer hitch is standard.  safety equipment includes front-seat frontal and side-impact air bags, three-row head-protection curtain air bags, anti-lock braking (abs), and electronic stability control with anti-rollover technology.  three trim levels are available: the entry-level xlt, the outdoor-styled eddie bauer, and luxurious limited.  the xlt 29,995) and 4wd xlt 32,895) offer full-size utility at an affordable price. The monochromatic interior features cloth upholstery with front captain's chairs (driver's seat is six-way power adjustable), a 40/20/40 split-bench seat in the second row, and a rear cargo bin. A tilt steering wheel, air conditioning and an am/fm stereo tuner with single-disk cd changer are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r-17 tires, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable outside mirrors, and a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system.  the xlt el 34,445) and xlt el 4wd 37,345) are similarly equipped as the standard wheelbase versions.  the option list for the xlt models includes second-row captain's chairs, a manual- or power-folding, third-row bench seat, rear load-leveling air suspension, and a heavy-duty towing package. Options include a navigation system, a premium am/fm stereo with six-disc cd changer, sirius satellite radio, and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system.  the eddie bauer 36,395) and eddie bauer 4wd 39,295) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique third-row seat which folds flat into the cargo floor. Other standard features for the eddie bauer model include leather upholstery with front captain's chairs (driver's seat is 10-way power adjustable), the third-row seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, an am/fm stereo tuner with 6cd changer, and protective cladding for the lower body panels.  the eddie bauer el 39,045) and eddie bauer el 4wd 41,945) are similarly equipped as the standard wheelbase versions.  options for the eddie bauer models include a lengthy list of practical features including a power-folding, third-row bench seat, rear load-leveling air suspension, a heavy-duty towing package, and second-row captain's chairs. Convenience features include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system.  the limited 37,845) and limited 4wd 40,745) are meant to deliver car-like, highway-friendly sophistication in a sport-utility package. The list of standard equipment resembles that of the eddie bauer model, but the style statement is far grander and the list of convenience features includes elaborate luxury items. Leather upholstery is standard, as are front captain's chairs (driver's seat is 10-way adjustable) with a heating/cooling feature. The power-folding rear bench seat is standard. Exterior upgrades include 255/70r18 tires with chrome-finish wheels, power-adjustable and folding mirrors.  the limited el 40,495) and limited el 4wd 43,395) are similarly equipped as the standard wheelbase versions.  the option list for the eddie bauer and eddie bauer el includes a lengthy list of practical features including a power-folding, third-row bench seat, an electronically powered liftgate, rear load-leveling air suspension, a heavy-duty towing package, and second-row captain's chairs. Convenien. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and, unlike so many other full-size sport-utilities, it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability, perhaps a byproduct of the extraordinarily rigorous testing they undergo at ford's brutal truck proving ground in arizona.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition are based on the tough, durable components of the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, chassis technology that improves driving precision, ride comfort, and even passenger packaging.  in the past, the expedition hasn't been able to establish much of a visual identity, as ford tried to make the first-generation expedition look like a car and then went to the other extreme with a notably clumsy interpretation of the heavy-duty tractor-trailer look in the second-generation version.  this new third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large jewel-like headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. Moreover, there are five different wheel designs, including new 20-inchers with a chrome finish. The expedition doesn't have the style of gm's sport-utilities, but at least it avoids the science-fiction look of the nissan armada and toyota sequoia.  the overall dimensions of the standard expedition are much the same as before, while the new expedition el stretches the standard vehicle's wheelbase by a foot to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 24 cubic feet of cargo volume, an increase to 130. 8 cubic feet behind the front seats from 108. 3 cubic feet.  both the standard expedition and the expedition el are great big vehicles, measuring more than seventeen feet from nose to tail. As a result, they're not at their best while maneuvering closer to the dry cleaners at a suburban mini-mall. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet. They're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs 5578 pounds, while the base 2wd el tips the scales at 5825 pounds. The addition of 4wd adds another 235 pounds to the bottom line.  to be frank, the expedition is the kind of vehicle that comes with running boards as standard equipment, and we're glad it does. interiorthe 2007 expedition has a brand-new interior look. The acres of cheap plastic seen in the previous models, so reminiscent of a rental car, have been replaced by a richer blend of finishes, textures and color. In fact, the overall effect of the fully optioned 2007 expedition limited is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's overall vehicle lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road.  this new appreciation for. 2010 ford fusion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The 2010 ford fusion, and in particular, the 2010 ford fusion hybrid, delivers contemporary styling, a first-class driving experience, and world-class fuel mileage.  epa ratings for the ford fusion hybrid are a stupendous 41/36 mpg city/highway. The fusion gets eight more miles per gallon in city driving and two more on the highway than does the toyota camry hybrid. During los angeles morning rush, we drove the fusion hybrid in heavy traffic from the sunset strip 10 miles west along hilly, snaking sunset boulevard to the beach, then south to santa monica pier, all the while proceeding at a distinctly non-funereal pace. The combined horsepower of the hybrid's gas engine and electric motor is 191 hp, but the literally instantaneous torque of its forceful electric motor makes it feel like more.  most of the new fusion's dimensions are unchanged from the previous model, but mechanically and in styling, the 2010 model exhibits vastly more than a mere freshening of last year's model. The new exterior, nicely enhanced with chrome, has a muscular, crisp euro panache that is, if anything, pleasingly saab-like.  the various gas-engine 2010 fusion models we drove are similarly comfortable, commodious, and in the case of the sport model, excitingly agile. A six-speed automatic is optional.  fusion se 20,545) adds six-speaker audio, fog lamps, fold-flat passenger seat, body-color mirrors, six-way power driver seat, sirius satellite radio, steering wheel audio and cruise controls, illuminated visor mirrors, and 17-inch wheels. A six-speed select-shift automatic is optional. How long has it been since the mainstream american mid-size elicited that?  the fusion's sinuousness is continued in the carefully raised modeling of the hood, implying that what lies beneath is something genuinely worthy. The fusion is no dragster, but its performance is spirited, and its 7. 0-second 0-to-60 time in the sport model gives it the edge over the honda accord (7. 4 seconds) and toyota camry (7. 1 seconds).  given the conservative looks of the honda and toyota, the fusion's styling makes a statement all its own. Its well-formed flanks, accented by gleaming streaks of chrome, give the fusion both a dynamically fresh appearance and excellent aerodynamic efficiency. Its coefficient of drag, aided by underbody airflow tuning, is an extremely low 0. 32, helping achieve high fuel mileage.  ford stylists were able to combine graceful styling with practicality in another way. The fusion's high-bustled three-box design delivers a tall, capacious trunk volume of 11. 8 cubic feet. It also delivers an easy lift-over height.  in style and stance, the new ford has a sporting, fun-to-drive spirit not normally associated with either japanese or american workaday mid-sizers. Think of ecoguide as an automotive video game. Black pebble-grain texture on the dash gave things a well-furnished glow. The seat cushions were flat and minimally cushioned. The two outside seats had a hint of lateral support, while the passenger in the center rear would be well advised to negotiate an upgrade.
