2006 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases.  the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750.  standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.  xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage.  the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500.  the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Seat side air bags, an new adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, a passenger classifier in the seat, and the tpms. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well.  the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides.  ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires.  this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested.  the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. 2006 ford freestar review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Packages and pricing have been simplified for 2006 models, and prices have been lowered.  the freestar is a solid performer, but it isn't the sharpest saw in the shed. It's now in its third year since being redesigned and is outclassed by newer entries. Power and associates research firm has rated freestar's overall quality and mechanical quality better than most. It can haul seven passengers and has a deep well behind the third row that's perfect for securely stowing a week's worth of groceries. Also, the third row can flip around to function as a tailgate seat, a neat trick for parking lot parties. A power rear liftgate and dual power sliding doors are available. Tow ratings of up to 3,500 pounds are possible, enough to handle personal watercraft, motorcycles, or other trailer toys.  on the highway, the freestar is smooth and quiet. It glides over rough pavement. It's easy to drive, with responsive handling and a big, powerful v6 engine. It doesn't feel as refined as the best and newest of the minivans, however.  freestar's strongest suit is safety: freestar earned five stars in the government's (nhtsa's) frontal impact crash testing, and is a 'best pick' for frontal offset crashes by the insurance institute for highway safety. Freestar received a five-star rating from nhtsa in driver and passenger front impact as well as passenger side impact. Ford's optional safety canopy can help protect against head injuries in a rollover or side impact; ford's system is designed to offer protection to passengers sitting on the outboard sides of all three rows. Freestar's seat belts use pretensioners and energy-management retractors to improve their effectiveness and reduce the chance of belt-related injuries.  to help drivers avoid crashing in the first place, the freestar comes standard with anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. A tire-pressure monitor is standard and self-sealing tires are available. The optional advancetrac electronic stability control helps drivers maintain control when swerving to avoid something or when entering a slippery corner too fast. lineupfreestar is offered in three trim levels: the value-oriented se, the mid-level sel, and the top-of-the-line limited. All models are front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is not available. A cleverly designed third-row bench seat folds flat into the floor or flips backward to form a tailgate bench seat.  freestar sel 26,615) boosts performance with a 4. 2-liter v6 engine. Sel also gets six-way power driver's seat, fold-and-tumble second-row captain's chairs, tri-zone (right, left, and rear) auxiliary climate control, automatic headlights, an illuminated entry keypad on the driver's door, illuminated visors, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with built-in audio controls. Exterior upgrades include 16-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels, cornering lamps. The sel grille is chrome, and the bumpers are body color. The se and sel can be upgraded with a premium appearance package.  the limited 29,575) adds leather upholstery for the front seats, dual power sliding doors, automatic climate control, power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, power heated mirrors with turn signals and puddle lamps, message center, analog clock, and contrasting-color bumpers for a two-tone effect.  options include a dvd rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones 1,395), and a six-disc cd changer 255), as well as 17-inch alloy wheels 245), self-sealing tires 280), trailer-towing package 335), power liftgate 400), rear spoiler 290). A memory package 425) stores settings for the mirrors, driver's seat, and pedals. A navigation system is not available on the freestar.  the advancetrac package 335) combines panic brake assist, traction control, and ford's advancetrac stability control. The package is available with a reverse-sensing system 730). Ford's optional safety canopy 695) side-curtain airbag system runs the length of the minivan on both sides and includes sensors that monitor for a rollover. If a rollover is detected, the air bags deploy from the headliner and stay inflated for up to six seconds to protect the heads of occupants in all three rows. Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front passengers complement the safety canopy. We suggest getting both the advancetrac and the safety canopy, but keep in mind that air bags work effectively only if all passengers are belted in and children are properly secured. So order all the stuff mentioned in this paragraph and buckle up. walkaroundthe ford freestar is based on the old windstar, and looks it. The only obvious differences are the hood, grille, headlamps, front fenders, and rear liftgate, which pick up styling cues from the ford trucks and suvs.  freestar sticks with traditional, mainstream minivan styling. Freestar does have one odd, distinguishing feature, however: the front side windows drop below the inside portion of the door trim which, say the freestar's designers, remains at a comfortable arm-rest height. The optional rear spoiler looks sporty. interiorthe ford freestar seats seven passengers: two in front, two in the second row and three in the third row. Standard seating in the second row is a bench. Captain's chairs are also available, and they slide horizontally on rails. They also fold and tumble forward, like those on the ford explorer and expedition, for easy access to the third row, or for extra cargo space.  the third-row seat folds into a well in the floor behind it, creating a flat load platform. Ford's fold-flat third-row seat may be the best in terms of ease of operation. Pull the clearly numbered straps in sequence, and the seat drops easily into the well. The third-row bench seat can also be dropped backward to create seating for tailgate parties.  with the third-row seat in place for passengers, there's more than 25 cubic feet of storage space; the well behind the seat provides a good spot for groceries or sports equipment. Freestar's cargo volume expands to 130 cubic feet when the third-row seat is folded and the second-row seats are removed (possible, but clumsy, for one person). The downside of ford's third row, however, is its short seat height compared with its counterparts in the honda odyssey and toyota sienna. As a result, adults will feel like their knees are too high. It works best for small children.  in fact, seat comfort throughout the freestar is not exceptional. Likewise, the second-row captain's chairs feel narrow.  overall, the interior is elegant, with a delicate watch-like clock in the center dashboard as its focal point. Ford spent more money on the freestar interior, and it's a dramatic upgrade over the windstar.  audio and climate controls are easy to reach. The black plastic controls could be prettier, but work well enough. The manual heating and air conditioning controls are rudimentary, but easy to operate. The system controls three zones, driver, passenger, and rear. Rear air conditioning is useful for cooling kids and pets on hot days, a very valuable feature.  storage space is abundant. Bins in the sliding doors offer a place for books and toys. Front doors have double map pockets, one above the other. A covered storage compartment provides space for small items like cell phones. The driver's seat on the limited model has a kangaroo pouch at the front of the cushion.  the freestar has numerous cupholders, including front door holders for 20-ounce bottles. Sturdy cupholders that fold down from the sides of the second-row captain's chairs are convenient and well-built. If kicked, as they likely will be, they snap back into their storage position against the seats. However, the beverage holders in the far-back are awkwardly positioned. driving impressiontwo engines are available in the freestar. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes standard on the se generates 193 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque and gets an epa-rated 18/23 mpg city/highway. The 4. 2-liter v6 that comes with the sel and limited delivers 201 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, yet surrenders only 1 mpg to the smaller engine. Freestar's larger 4. 2-liter v6 is the largest in any minivan, and is likely the better choice for h. 2006 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's also stylish, among the best-looking in a group of handsome full-size pickups for the 2006 model year.  properly equipped, an f-150 can tow 9,900 pounds or haul more than 3,000 pounds in the bed. The f-150 is comfortable as well, with a quiet and refined ride and comfortable interiors that show attention to detail. Handling is excellent for a pickup.  the f-150 earned a five-star safety rating from the government (nhtsa) in frontal crash testing and was named a 'best pick' in offset-crash rating from the insurance institute for highway safety. F-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. Ford has not significantly changed the f-150 since then except to expand the lineup every year with new trim levels, variations, and specialty models.  for 2006, supercrew (crew cab) models will be available with a longer, 6. 5-foot bed; as well as the standard 5. 5-foot short bed. A limited-production harley-davidson edition, previously offered on super duty models, is now available as an f-150 supercab (extended cab). The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Wheelbases as long as 163. 0 inches (e. G., a supercab with the 8-foot long bed) are available.  three engines are offered: a 4. 2-liter v6, a 4. 6-liter v8, and a 5. 4-liter v8. In the models most consumers will buy, the 4. 6-liter v8 is standard. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia, painted silver bumpers and 17-inch steel wheels. Regular cab and supercab (extended cab) styles are available, and the latter comes with air conditioning (an $850 option on regular cabs). An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd short wheelbase model with a 4. 6-liter v8 and automatic retails for $20,635, or $18,790 with a v6 and manual gearbox; a supercab long-wheelbase 4wd with a v8 and automatic retails for $27,275. Chrome bumpers and cloth seats are optional.  stx is sportier than the xl, with body-color bumpers and body-color trim for the black grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Cloth seats, a cd player, and air conditioning come standard. Stx comes in styleside and flareside body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx 2wd flareside retails for $23,030.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl. It comes with chrome bumpers and a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Carpeting is standard, as is a premium cloth upholstery on the standard bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash; and power windows, mirrors and locks with remote keyless entry are standard. The xlt features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4wd xlts. An xlt supercrew 4wd 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $34,055.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a floor shifter, and chrome accents; while the exterior is distinguished by a unique grille, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, and body-color or dark shadow gray bumpers, depending on paint choice. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, but the long (8-foot) bed is not available. The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercrew 4wd retails for $35,495.  lariat is the luxury model, distinguished visually by a unique grille design (chrome housing around arizona beige insert) and bright-finish 18-inch aluminum wheels. Bumpers are chrome or arizona beige. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power-adjustable and leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustab. walkaroundin the late 1990s, f-150 went aerodynamically curvy, and although it remained number one in sales, not everyone liked the look. So for 2004, ford returned the f-150 to its square-shouldered roots, with a more utilitarian look that continues essentially unchanged for 2006.  it's a functional look, but in its own way it's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram. In fact, the f-150 has a unique image, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. It's at once crisp, bold, and sturdy. In short, we think the f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 shares styling cues with ford's handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp downward drop in the forward part of the door windows, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure.  the whole nose is square in concept, with a large, bold, big-rig grille opening. Yet the front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through to the tailgate. F-150 is both upscale and utilitarian, a look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, arizona beige on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch wear a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for a generous margin when hauling larger cargoes. The basic xl is surprisingly nice. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of texas and cowboys. We love the king ranch, but it's not for everyone.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they are flat and lack support. The front bench is split three ways. The center section flips down to reveal a center console with storage and cup holders. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms, however, because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight. Rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep, holds a lot of stuff, and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic transmission works very well.  radio and hvac (heater) controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Lariat comes with every known.
