America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular. the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles. safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model. the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited. an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires. the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model. adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls. the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers. seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident. third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases. the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder. we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750. standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage. the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500. the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well. the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they. A new kind of explorer gets a new kind of engine. introductionout of the box, the ford explorer has demonstrated itself to be one the best, seven-passenger sport-utility vehicles available. It delivers the function and family friendly features of a minivan with a more rugged emotional appeal, off-road and towing capability for those who need it, and suv mileage that was unheard of back in the day. the venerable explorer was essentially re-invented for 2011, and ford might have taken a pass on further improvements for 2012. The opposite is true. It has more power than the standard v6 in the previous-generation explorer, with half the displacement, and it delivers the highest epa mileage ratings in this class: 20/28 mpg city/highway. this latest-generation explorer has a one-piece, unitized body and frame like the typical sedan, rather than an old-school, ladder-type truck frame with a separate, bolted on body. Both the 2. 0 ecoboost and the standard 3. 5-liter v6 are more powerful than previous-generation engines, yet mileage improves up to 40 percent. the 2012 explorer is available in base, xlt and limited trim levels. All are great looking, rugged in a familiar suv way, but also fresh and aerodynamically refined, and all models seat seven. This big suv actually looks smaller than it is. inside, there is class-leading legroom in the second row, real space for passengers in the third, and up to 80. 7 cubic-feet of cargo space. It can be reconfigured in seconds, with split rear seats that fold with a button on each side and bounce back up with the pull of a lever. The interior is smartly styled and well finished. The materials are good and the build quality great. the base explorer comes well equipped, with all the essentials, plenty of niceties and no overly complicated controls. The leather-upholstered, heated-seat limited is luxury grade. It's offered with nearly all the bells and whistles, including premium audio, navigation and rear-seat dvd entertainment. We prefer the standard 290-horspower v6. It delivers smooth, strong acceleration, and ranks near the top of the class in both horsepower and fuel economy: 17/25 mpg. explorer's chassis is super rigid, using twice as much high-strength steel as the old. That makes for not only great crash-test scores, but also a quiet cabin, excellent ride quality and solid handling that belies the explorer's considerable size. all-wheel drive is available on all models with the v6. The all-wheel drive maximizes traction with a fancy electronic system called terrain management. Even with regular all-season tires rather than specialized tires, the explorer will blast through sand or traverse deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. And it has the smoothest ride we've encountered over such terrain. ford claims the explorer has 10 segment-exclusive features or systems, starting with a couple of safety standouts: the optional inflatable rear seatbelts and standard curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory. Beyond the required complement of front, front-side and head-protection airbags, it has an extra knee-protection airbag for the front passenger and all the electronic traction and stability systems, including rollover mitigation and trailer sway control. lineupthe 2012 ford explorer comes in three models. Each comes standard with a 290-hp, 3. 5-liter v6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Options are limited to ford's sync voice activation and phone connection system 295), satellite radio hardware 195), a cargo shade 135), and a tow package 570). explorer xlt 31,995) adds upgraded cloth seats, leather steering wheel and shift knob, basic sync and satellite radio, a security touchpad on the driver's door, automatic headlamps, heated sideview mirrors with led turn signals and security approach lamps, a backup warning beeper and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. explorer limited 37,995) adds leather seats, 10-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, 390-watt sony audio with cd changer, selectshift manual mode for the 6-speed automatic transmission, power folding outside mirrors, ambient lighting, adjustable pedals with memory, cargo net, a rearview camera, remote start, a 110-volt outlet, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels, and last but not least the myfordtouch driver connect technology. Second-row captain's chairs are available on limited. options for the xlt and limited are plentiful, somewhat confusing and grouped in various packages. One of the most popular is equipment group 202a 2,250) for the xlt, which includes leather seating, the 10-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rearview camera and ambient lighting. Stand alone options include a voice-activated navigation system 795), a panoramic glass sunroof 1,595), dual-screen rear seat dvd system 1,995) and a power liftgate 495). safety features are headlined by ford's new curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory. It's part of a comprehensive electronics suite, which also includes antilock brakes and ford's activetrack stability system with rollover mitigation and trailer sway control. Standard crash protection starts with dual-threshold front airbags, a front passenger knee protection airbag, front-seat side impact airbags, head-protection curtains for all outboard seats and sos post-crash alert. The insurance institute for highway safety rates the explorer a top safety pick. one optional safety feature is the industry-first inflatable rear seatbelts, which spread impact forces over an area five times greater than conventional seat belts, reducing pressure on the chest and helping to control head and neck motion. Other safety options include the rearview camera and rear obstacle warning, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, and a blind-sport warning system with cross-traffic alert. All-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe ford explorer is a looker, rugged but refined, familiar but definitely fresh. Five new metallic paint colors for 2012 enhance its polished appearance. re-invented for 2011, the current explorer is 4 inches longer and 5 inches wider than its body-on-frame predecessor. It's a foot longer than ford's edge crossover, a few inches shorter than the dodge durango suv and about eight inches shorter than the chevy traverse. Yet it's several inches wider than all of them. explorer's width is evident in its confident stance, but its smooth styling cheats the eye. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with fluid lines that are more aerodynamic than before. The amber indicators sweep back like narrow wings atop tidy main projector beams. The plastic grille is gray on the base explorer, body-colored on the xlt (the best looking), and satin-chrome on the limited. The hood looks short from the side but long when looking straight down it. It's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center, smoother than it sounds. Rear taillights are led, and also look good. We still like body-colored better. the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang, body sides follow the lines of the taurus, and the three-bar grille strikes clearly of range rover (until recently part of the ford family). There's a rich, shiny brownish color called golden bronze metallic that we swear we've seen on range rovers, only it looks even better on the explorer. wheels are 17-inch steel with plastic cov.
